The Screw

Des flammes brûlantes, de la fumée noire montante, des gouttes de sueur coulants sur les visages couverts de suie, les voix énervées des hommes résonnantes dans l’air et l’odeur du fioul.
Depuis ma première visite au Bangladesh en 2012, je visite et photographie les travailleurs qui fabriquent des « hélices » de bateaux. Ils travaillent dans un petit atelier sombre comme une caverne.
Là, adultes et enfants travaillent ensemble à verser le liquide rouge fondu, comme le magma, dans le sol aussi noir que la poix, couvert du sable de fer afin d’affiner le métal dur et froid.
Comme un mythe de création du monde.
L'immobilité et le mouvement, la douceur et la dureté, la lumière et l'ombre, la régénération et la destruction.
Les hélices sont produites avec comme carburant l'énorme travail des ouvriers.
Encore et encore, j’étais absorbé par cette énorme énergie tourbillonnante dans ce petit atelier et je fixais mon regard sur eux comme si je les dévorais des yeux.

Un cour roman, The Screw (l’hélice), de l’écrivain japonais Shinji Ishii, se trouve à la fin de ce livre.
Comme beaucoup d'autres livres de Yoshida, Tamon Yahagi a crée le design de celui-ci.
La photo de couverture a été imprimée sur une presse risograph, le titre est estampillé et chaque livre est signé de l’auteur.
Les hélices représentées dans ce livre sont toutes produites à la main et chaque hélice est légèrement différente des autres.

Scorching flames, rising black smoke, beads of sweat streaming down sooty faces, men's angry voices echoing through the air, and the smell of fuel oil. Since my first visit to Bangladesh in 2012, I have repeatedly visited and photographed the people who make the "screws" of ships. They worked in a small, dark, cave-like workshop.
There, adults and children worked together to create a cold, hard metal by pouring molten red liquid, like magma, into the pitch-black ground, which was covered with iron sand. It was like a world of creation myths.
Stillness and motion, softness and hardness, light and shadow, regeneration and destruction.
The screw is produced using the tremendous labor of the workers as fuel.
Again and again, I was absorbed by the tremendous energy swirling in this small workshop and gazed at them as if devouring them.

At the end of the book is a novel entitled “The Screw" written by novelist Ishii Shinji for this book.
Design is by Tamon Yahagi, who has worked on many of Yoshida's photo books.
The cover photo was printed on a RISO-graph printing press, the title name was stamped, and the author's name was handwritten by Akihito Yoshida for each book.
The screws depicted in this book are all produced by hand, and each screw is slightly different from the others.
